Simple Mouthwash

While nothing can replace daily brushing and flossing, mouthwash can be a great addition to your oral hygiene routine. However, not all mouthwashes are created equal, and some use more questionable ingredients than others. One way to freshen your mouth without the worry is to create your own mouthwash using essential oils instead. Try out our most simple mouthwash recipe below:

Ingredients
10 drops Peppermint oil (also recommended: Myrrh, Cinnamon, or doTERRA On Guard®)
2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Add water and essential oil to a 16 ounce dark glass bottle.
  2. Shake well before each use. Take small sips and swish. Do not swallow.
  3. Because this is simply water and essential oil, this mixture should last for a while. But, you can cut the recipe in half if you would prefer to use it more quickly.

“Wellness” Wednesday

Here are nine great tips on how destress:

  1. In any situation, take two minutes to breathe. We’re not just talking about trying to breathe deeply in and out here, though that is the start of it. Improve on this idea by using the 4–7–8 breathing exercise. Breathing only through your nose, count to four as you deeply inhale, then count to seven as you hold your breath, and count to eight as you exhale. Repeat the cycle three more times. This should take around two minutes to complete. This will help you focus on your body and help you breathe more deeply on a regular basis without even needing to think about it.
  2. Drink herbal tea. If you’ve never tried herbal tea, now might be a good time to give it a try for some stress relief. Teas like lemon balm, peppermint, chamomile, or passion flower are helpful. You can incorporate essential oils into your tea as well—infuse a drop of essential oils like Roman Chamomile, Lavender, or Melissa into herbal teas like chamomile to soothe the body and mind.* Just the act of drinking warm tea can also be soothing and relaxing and just the boost you need for the day.
  3. Get outside in the fresh air. Although this is easier to do when the weather is nice, even when the weather is not ideal, it is a good idea to at least get a few minutes of fresh air each day and get your body moving. Reconnecting to the outside world and nature can help you refocus and feel better. If you can’t go outside in this moment, reach for Vetiver. Its calming and grounding effect on emotions is great to diffuse, or to put directly in your palms, cup your hands around your nose, and inhale.
  4. Exercise for at least for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Exercise is known to bump up the level of endorphin production, improves your mood, and helps you move past the day’s irritations. Learn more about exercise and stress resilience here.
  5. Set out 10 minutes in the morning for meditation. In yoga specifically, meditating is about being grounded physically and mentally, and coming to an expanded state of awareness. You can start meditating by choosing a consistent time and place, and then picking something to focus on for that session. (Examples of different focuses include a helpful intention or affirmation like “I am relaxed”, counting your breath as in point number one, or visualizing your favorite spot in nature and trying to keep your focus on that only.) Don’t be discouraged if your mind starts to wander, just refocus back on your purpose. You can also increase the effects of mediation by diffusing calming oils like Frankincense while you practice. There are many other ways to meditate, try different kinds before you determine how to incorporate it into your daily life.
  6. Give yourself a hand massage. According to a 2008 study published by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, a five-minute hand massage can lower stress levels. If you can’t find anyone to give you one, you can massage your own hands. To reduce the effects of daily stress, put a drop of Ylang Ylang or AromaTouch® and some Fractionated Coconut Oil into your palms and massage your hand slowly using the AromaTouch Hand Technique.
  7. Apply PastTense® or doTERRA Peace®. Because PastTense comes in a roll-on bottle, this grounding and soothing blend is convenient and easy to use. (doTERRA Peace also comes in a roll-on version that is equally as easy.) You can apply either blend to your temples, wrists, or the back of your neck in times when you need to quickly ease stressful or anxious feelings on the go.
  8. Ensure that you get enough sleep. Dr. David K. Hill, doTERRA Chief Medical Advisor, insists that, “Sufficient amounts of rest provide bodies with an opportunity to recover from the day’s activity, improve energy levels, and reduce the effects of stress.” If you currently struggle with falling asleep, diffuse doTERRA Serenity® about 30 minutes before you go to bed, or take doTERRA Serenity® Softgels.
  9. Generate a support system. This may be our most important tip, because even though it can be hard to reach out to others when you feel overwhelmed, sometimes it is necessary to depend on other people for help. Don’t try to keep going alone. Even if the stress is over something that you feel you have to do alone, at least having someone there to listen or give you a hug (which is proven to help with stress on its own) can help more than you realize.

Image result for Six More Tips for Boosting Your Energy

Here are six great tips on how to boost your energy:

  1. You’re mostly sedentary. The bad news here is that even your hour-long workout doesn’t matter much if you’re sitting the rest of the day. As human beings, we create energy for ourselves by moving around. (Just think about how much more awake you feel after going for even a brief walk.)
How to fix: Every 90 minutes, get up and do two minutes of exercises like jumping jacks, or walk around for a few minutes.
  2. Your sleep cycles are out of balance. Lying in bed for seven to eight hours won’t always fix the problem if you’re tired all the time. Sleep cycles are typically 75 to 90 minutes each, and they correlate with specific regeneration or detoxification of cells and organs throughout your body. Elevated stress or unstable blood sugar levels can throw off your sleep cycles. Disrupted REM sleep has been associated with mild psychological problems like having a hard time concentrating and irritability.
How to fix: Let in more sunlight in the morning to decrease stress or cortisol levels at night. As hard as it is, don’t hit the snooze button: by falling asleep again you could be interrupting your hormone cycle that makes it even harder to get going. Instead, set your alarm for 15 minutes later if you can spare the time.
  3. You need a new breakfast. Eating coffee and a bagel or pastry isn’t going to get you far into your day—not enough unrefined carbs, healthy fats, or protein. The addage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day is true, but sometimes it also seems like a colossal challenge so we go with anything easy.
How to fix: A breakfast that will keep you satisfied longer doesn’t have to be complicated. Instead of refined carbs, go for high-fiber (whole-grain toast with peanut butter), protein (eggs and a whole-grain tortilla), or both (oatmeal with nuts).
  4. You don’t get the other nutrients you need. This goes with the above step, but applies to your diet overall. Our cells receive energy from adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. While it helps run your body, it has to be bound to magnesium to work, to make sure the processes in your body are functioning. Without magnesium, it can’t do anything.
How to fix: Eat magnesium-rich foods like spinach, pumpkin seeds, and almonds each and every day. Add in a magnesium supplement. Eat a well-balanced diet that avoids processed foods. Get more potassium and Vitamin D. Add in a supplement like doTERRA Lifelong Vitality® to ensure you’re getting all the essential nutrients your body needs.
  5. You’re dehydrated. Your brain and nervous system take even a minimal amount of dehydration very seriously, causing headaches and fatigue. Every organ, cell, and tissue in your body operates using water in some way.
How to fix: Make sure to drink a full glass of water in the morning when you wake up, and then continue to drink at least half your body weight in ounces throughout the day. Change up the taste of your water by adding in citrus oils like Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, or Wild Orange.
  6. You’re stressing. Constantly being in fight-or-flight mode for whatever reason (bills, traffic, etc.) means that you crash when your body has had enough. Unfortunately, your energy reserves cannot consistenly hold up in the face of relentless stress.
How to fix: Use essential oils like Frankincense, Vetiver, AromaTouch®, or Roman Chamomile, whether on your skin or diffused into the air. For more tips on what to do about stress, read up on Nine Ways to De-stress or Aromatherapy and Meditation to Reduce Stress

The use of essential oils is rewarding and provides many opportunities to appropriately manage individual health. One can either alleviate specific health symptoms or act through a model of daily wellness. Using a variety of essential oils on a regular basis could be more significant than focusing on oil selection or specific application methods. Routine and deliberate application of essential oils can often increase and even sustain health benefits. Routine exposure can be achieved through aromatic, topical, and internal consumption based on the individual needs and level of expertise.

The following guidelines will help determine how to implement doTERRA essential oils into a daily model of consistency based on an individual’s unique health and lifestyle circumstances.

1. Quality

To prevent sensitivities, it is important to use only pure essential oils, such as essential oils that have the doTERRA CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality standard. Using altered essential oils dramatically increases the likelihood that a sensitivity or inappropriate response will develop.

2. Chemistry

The chemical structure and reactivity of some essential oil elements makes them more potent than others. Phenols and aldehydes are especially strong. Diluting oils that contain a high proportion of these types of elements or using a lower dose is an excellent way to ensure safe application.

3. Variety

A unique feature of essential oils is that they share many of the same benefits. There is safety and increased benefit from variety, which is one of the foundational principles of health. Try introducing a wide variety of oils into your personal usage protocol rather than focusing on just one or two main oils.

4. Amount

A common misconception is to assume that more is always better. While this may be true in some instances, it is not true with essential oils. They are highly concentrated and very potent, so a small dose is all that is needed to achieve powerful benefits. It is best to use smaller amounts of oil and apply more frequently.

5. Dilution

There are many benefits to diluting essential oils, including slowing the rate of absorption to prevent sensitivities and increasing the surface area of absorption. I generally recommend a dilution ratio of one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil. This ratio can be altered depending on the chemistry of the oil and the preferences or sensitivities of the user.

6. Personal Consideration

Certain individuals, such as young children and the elderly, require special precautions when using essential oils because their skin is typically more sensitive. Appropriate dilution modifications or essential oil substitutions should be made to cater to their individual needs.

doTERRA essential oils are highly concentrated and very potent, so a small dose is all that is needed to achieve powerful benefits.
